As its approaching the end of the year I thought it would be a good time for one of my very irregular blog posts. This is a case of old friends reunited. It's amazing what you can find in an old box. Hunting for something totally unrelated I stumbled across this. It is a piece I made many years ago, maybe as far back as 2003, which means its been in bubblewrap for around fifteen years and has been transported from the UK to Singapore and then Japan without ever seeing the light of day! It's free blown by me and drill engraved with a section of a musical score, probably a section of Rue Des Cascades or La Valse Des Monstres by Yann Tiersen who I was listening to a lot back then. If that is the case exactly why I decided to call it Minuet is lost to memory. Possibly I just liked the sound of the word.
Often it is embarrassing to look at earlier works. At the start of the week I compared a recently engraved short story I with one completed about five years ago and was shocked by how crude the older one was. Interestingly this piece feels like quite a decent bit of work. The shape is unusual for me. Normally I prefer very clean straight, symmetrical forms as they offer the cleanest and most logical approach for composing image or text. This, as you can see, is much more free. Which makes me think I should get out of my comfort zone and try some more unusual shapes like this... We'll see if I follow through on that in my next post in about a year from now!
